There are many reasons everyone loves to come to the UAE and live here. The ease of travelling between the emirates and the low rents which are available makes people live in Sharjah. In Sharjah, if you are coming to stay in a villa or a flat you have to get registered with Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA). This registration is required for getting connected to the facilities such as electricity, water and gas. In this article, we provide an overview of SEWA services that are provided to the people of Sharjah. The apartments in Sharjah are affordable for rent and they range from studio apartments to four bedrooms apartments. Irrespective of the size of the property and the type of the property you own you have to take the SEWA connection. 

Earlier Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority was known as Sharjah Electricity and Water Company, it worked as a private unit prior to becoming part of the United Arab Emirates. Later it became part of the UAE government as Electricity & Water Dept. At present Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority operates under the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.   

Services Provided by SEWA

SEWA has ‘power stations & water plants’ in different parts of Sharjah. Primarily in locations like Layyah, Wasit, Kalba, Hamriya and Khorfakkan. The company has been certified by ISO 500001. In 2015 a new centre was started in Nasseriya it is the biggest control smart screens in that area. SEWA has been providing smart meters throughout Sharjah. Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority supplies 

  • Electricity
  • Water 
  • Gas connection. 

Drinking water subsidiary is being provided by the company, Zulal is a factory in Rahmania. SEWA has customer support centres in the below regions. 

  • Al Majaz
  • Industrial Area
  • Al Marijah
  • Al Jazzat
  • Halwan
  • Al Qasimia
  • Al Taawun

The customer care centres provide good quality services to the SEWA users. There are also SEWA e-portal & SEWA applications which provide easy access to the customers to handle SEWA bill enquiry, payment of the bills, profile updation and also cancellation of the account.

SEWA Electricity Connection

Activation of Electricity through the SEWA in Sharjah is processed through the application. You have to submit your details to the customer centre at your nearest location. You need the below documents to submit along with the application.  

  • A copy of the trade license which is SEWA approved by electric contractors
  • Professional license of ‘Economic Development Department contractor’
  • A contract of Tenancy
  • Emirates Identity 
  • A certificate of ownership
  • Affection Plan
  • A copy of passport
  • Building Permit
  • A copy of license for companies/establishments

To get the permanent connection of the above, you should submit the electricity inspection report application and Thermal insulation inspection report application.

For over a period of time, if you want to change the meter due to any reason for increase in meter load or installation of additional meter you have to submit the additional documents such as previous month bill, No objection certificate from the owner and building permit. 

SEWA Water Connection

Getting Water through the SEWA in Sharjah is processed through the application. You have to submit your details to the customer centre at your nearest location. You need the below documents to submit along with the application to get permanent water connection for home. 

  • Emirates Identification
  • Municipality approved completion certificate
  • A copy of tenancy agreement
  • A copy of ownership certificate
  • Affection plan
  • A copy of trade license of building contractors
  • Any other documents as required by the authorities

To change your water meter or if you want to relocate your water meter you need these documents such as previous bills, affection plan copy and a letter from the customer care. Once the documents and application are submitted the authorities will take appropriate action and work on getting the water meter changed.

SEWA Gas Connection

To install a gas connection in Sharjah you need to submit the application along with the below documents.

  • Drawings approved by SEWA gas pipe
  • Building Permit
  • Affection plan
  • A copy of the trade license from contractor
  • Gas contractor confirmation letter
  • Applicable fee payment for building completion certificate

You can directly apply for converting your cooker to natural gas by submitting an application through the official website of SEWA. You can either send your copy of the gas bill along with your phone number on whatsapp number +971-56-511-32362, once you send the details you have to contact the call center of the Natural gas department at +971-6-502-6660. If you are changing your location or changing gas fittings you can contact at this number +971-6-502-6793 or +971-6-502-6749 and inform the same. You have to provide your account identification number which is available on the invoice. After all the paperwork is done by the customer, the process is initiated by the authorities and the changes are made by the authorities.

Online SEWA 

For the benefit of the customers, Sharjah SEWA authorities have taken up many digital initiatives for the customers. Online services and mobile apps can be easily accessed and services can be availed. You just need to create your own online account and start accessing the services. You can do the following using the online facilities.

  • You can check SEWA bills anytime anywhere
  • Pay your bills at your convenience
  • Editing or updating your profiles
  • Check your utility graph
  • Cancel your account

To register and use the online portal you have to provide information to SEWA. You have to submit a copy of Emirates id, a copy of your tenancy agreement, mobile number, account id, email id, certificate of ownership and other documents to regsupport@sewa.gov.ae. Once all the details have been updated in the system you can access e-services by visiting the eservices.sewa.gov.ae and register for an online account. 

SEWA Mobile App

SEWA is available on iOS and Android. You should create an account to access the facilities. You can find a list of contractors on the SEWA website. SEWA smart app provides the following features 

  • Enquiry on the bill & upto twelve months history of payments 
  • Online payments through credit cards 
  • Utility graphs 
  • Find out the nearest customer support location 
  • GPS location 
  • Latest news/ updates

SEWA Bill Payment

Bill payments can be done through the online portal or through the smart app. The government encourages the green bill initiative and green payments. You can make payments through VISA & Mastercards with service charges of 1.75%. As of now, there are twenty-two banks in Sharjah which facilitate SEWA bill payments which include

You can make SEWA bill payment at SEWA customer care centres, UAE exchange centres or Emirates Post Office. Payments can also be made through Etisalat e-payment machine. 

How to cancel a SEWA account?

You can easily cancel your SEWA account by visiting the website or app. You need to submit the below documents to cancel your account.

  • A clear title certificate from Municipal authorities 
  • A copy of tenancy agreement
  • Deposit receipt
  • Emirates identification copy

SEWA authorities will assign personnel to disconnect the meters and connections. All outstanding dues should be paid and cleared. If you need to disconnect on priority, you should pay an AED 200 for quick services.
